There was a time when the only way to get to Bluffton was by water. Steamer ships, massive delivery packets and ferries would bring everything from passengers to supplies to news of the world right to the Calhoun Street Dock. For the wealthy planters who summered on the high bluffs around Bluffton, that was the only way to get here, and the only way to get back.
Today, we’re fortunate to have a few more options.
There are two nearby airports that provide service to the Bluffton area. The closest, just over the bridge, is Hilton Head Airport. Providing year-round service on American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, this county-owned airport gives a quick and easy way to get where you’re going, breezing through the short lines at security and offering nearby convenience. Located just across the state line, Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport boasts year-round flights on the big three as well as smaller carriers like Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country, Silver, Breeze and Avelo. Recently named Best Domestic Airport in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2022, our little hometown airport is making some big waves.
And of course, once you get here, you’ll have plenty of options for getting around. And one of the most enjoyable ways to crisscross Old Town is in the backseat of a Bluffton Bike Taxi. As your knowledgeable guide pedals along, sharing stories of Bluffton’s unique history, you’ll enjoy a leisurely toll around some of the fascinating sites in town. If you have your sights set on a trip outside of the one-square-mile of Old Town, all you have to do is catch the breeze. The Palmetto Breeze trolley runs in a circuit across Bluffton’s many attractions, from the shopping and dining along Buckwalter Parkway to the Tanger Malls, swinging down Calhoun Street to soak in the scenery.
But if you need to take the good time to go, or if you have a crowd looking for a different kind of night out, checking out Island Party Bus. They’ll not only get you where you’re going, you’ll arrive buzzing from the disco lights, party atmosphere and crazy vibe of a party that just doesn’t stop. For something a little more refined, Bluffton’s own hometown limo service, Camelot Limousine, has a fleet of shuttles and slick stretch Lincolns for a classy lift to wherever you’re going.
